Getting ready for that trip to DC -- with or without subpoena.

Many thanks to those of you who bought some of the stuff I had for sale. (Still have a half-dozen hardback magazines for sale if people are interested.) Even more thanks to those of you who wrote me, as one fellow did, "Screw the magazines, here's a little 'subscription' money for gas, glasses, or whatever."

At the moment the prospects of David and me being subpoenaed by the GOP side of things looks less likely than was represented before, but there remains a possibility that the Dems might want to try to "discredit" the whistleblowers by trying to link this "extremist" to the early part of the saga. (More likelihood of that if the Dems decide to have Senate side hearings where they control the witness list.)

"Oh, please, Brer Fox! Don' trow me in dat briar patch!"

In any case, after considerable back and forth discussion, I believe I can still do some significant good in DC at either the second or third phase House hearings, even if not subpoenaed. My lodging will be free, as I stated before, and there's always Amtrak to get there.

My new glasses are on the way now and just in time. The last of Rosey's makeshift $3.00 Wal-Mart sunglasses frames (they no longer stock them) has developed the familiar fatal crack at the left temple. The bottom-of-the-line Lenscrafters ought to get here just about the time the WalMarts fall off my face.

Per my old friend Joe's advice, I'm not looking for a "cheap suit" but rather a good, used one at a consignment shop. There are a number of them hereabouts, although finding one to match my rotundity may be problematic. I'll look for one after my doctor's appointment this morning.

Again, may God bless all of you who sent me "subscription" money. It won't be wasted, I promise you.

Just read about your results (not attributed) in the New York TImes (visiting parents who still read). When even a progressive White House media outlet picks up a story like the one you uncovered, well, hell, just a great job.

Look at Volunteers of America for a suit. My dad bought a $400 suit for $10 there.

For future reference, have you looked at Zenni Optical? You can get single visions for 6.95 with 4.95 shipping for the whole order. I ordered the cheapies from them and they're no worse than the ones I got in the brick and mortar store....

Re: good cheap eyeglasses. Check out zennioptical.com. I've bought more than 6 pair from them over the last couple years. Just make sure you pay attention to the measurements so you get frames that fit your face. The perscription sunglasses I currently wear came from Zenni, I paid less than $30.00 for em and they've lasted a year and a half so far.

The last actual suit that I had, I bought at a thrift shop here in the area and I found out that if you get an all-wool suit that is too loose ( like, way too loose ) you can wet it down, put it in a dryer for a while and take it out, now and again, to check on the shrinkage. Eventually it fit me well enough to go tot he functions for which I needed it.

Sure would be nice if "the stuff you have for sale" included copies of "Absolved"...

Do you even begin to recognize how pathetic you are? I mean, a right-wing, God-loves-the-free-market, welfare-is-socialism nutbag to whom capitalism has been so wonderful he cannot even afford a decent set of clothes or prescription eyeglasses to wear in civilized society and is reduced to begging on the Internet. You're a living commercial for the poor, rural, white underclass and its need for government assistance. Without Social Security disability, you'd be long dead.

Daaaang Mike - when a rabid liberal takes the time to insult you here, you know they must see the writing on the wall. Reminds me of an uber left fellow at a place where I used to work - this guy literally started punching walls and kicking trashcans around AT WORK when it became official that Gore had lost in 2000. I wonder if Obamacare covers free counceling?

Anonymous, I was raised to be a gentleman. Obviously, you were not. Enjoy your wealth, your smug satisfaction & self righteousness, and don't miss any chances to put people down. You really seem to think you're BETTER than Mike, but you aren't fit to shine Mike's shoes, Mister.

I've never met either of you, but I bet he'd do for you what he could if you were in need. When you're hungry, don't ask a rich man for food or you'll never finish paying. A poor man will share his bread & thank God he has enough to eat and someone to share it with. Please, sir, learn to do the same. May God bless & keep you. I'd sign my name, but I can't log in to my Gmail account. I'm known here as Cowboy Dan. And you are???

Poor Anonymous...

Does he realize how pathetic he really is? Being honest about ones ability to pay for things, instead of just rolling up another lifetime's worth of unsupportable debt, is one of the hallmarks of responsible adulthood.

Being willing to sell personal goods, because those goods have less value than the money that they will bring, is also an honest and upright reaction to a financial need.

The fact that others are willing to sponsor this trip, whether it be charity, purchase of said goods, or subscriptions to a valuable resource that is otherwise 'free', says much about the service that Mike provides to our community. "Anonymous" conveniently leaves out the fact that disability benefits were supposed to provide for a modicum of comfort to those unable to work, and that his liberal-utopian egalitarian fantasies are really just smokescreen for wielding power over others in order to make themselves feel better.

Screw that.

Mike, I will support you as much as I am able while you are here, because your 'mission' is important. Just as I support other individuals and groups whose goals and values are my own. (And, I would really like to buy a few more copies of Absolved when it publishes)

Pax,
